The Battle of Trenton
This took place on the morning of December 26, 1776 in Trenton, New Jersey. The day after Christmas. The leaders and commanders of this war were George Washington and Nathanael Greene. After 8 o'clock in the morning, the British sailed across the Delaware river. After a very short battle half of the Hessian solders were captured. There voyage across the Delaware river was very dangerous, there was frozen ice forming around the boat. There was 2 boats that couldn't make it across so Washington was left with only 2,400 men under his command.
After there long voyage across the Delaware river, they marched in three column forms to South of Trenton. They marched 9 miles. The Hessian solders had dropped there guard and didm't think the American Army was there to attack them, none of the men were on there patrols or at there posts. When Washington forced them to charge it caught all them men off guard, after a short resistance of not knowing what they were suppose to do, half of there men were captured, almost two-thirds of the men were gone, there were 1,500 men left in his army. Even though they had a very short amount of people left, the American Victory inspired rebels in the colonies.
The British wore red coats and leather crested helmets. The German wore blue coats and retained the prussian style, grenadier mitre with brass front plate. One gun they would use is called the matchlock musket, This was the first hand held fire-arm ever made back then, This gun made it possible to have a free hand shot, so it was possible to have both hands free also to keep more of a firm grip on the gun, also it made it so much easier to keep an eye on your target so you can more accurate shots. The name "Redcoats" actually means soldier, this is what they would call the British army soldiers. They would wear these uniforms from the early 17th century to the 20th century.
The Battle of Trenton took place in Trenton, New Jersey. This is the original battle map of the war. This map shows all the great details of where George Washington was planning to attack and where he was camping out, everything he ever needed to attack. Washington finally decided to attack at twilight on Christmas night, he had about 2,000 men waiting on the edge of the shore, for his back up help. There was ice forming on the shore it was becoming a cold and dark winter night, it started to snow and sleet at about 4 a.m. of the war. They could barley make it across the cold winter night. When they finally made it to land they started walking the colonist soldiers feet were killing them from the cold snow on the ground. The men had gone through some very harsh times, they had lost 2 men in the Delaware River also they lost all of there gun powder. It was very hard keeping all of there supplies in there very small boats, you had to keep and eye on your guns, gun powder, and absolutely everything that was even close to the side of your boat. George Washington kept quoting this to his soldiers -
to show that there was still faith, and to stay strong so they can defeat the Hessian forces. "Discipline is the soul of an army. It makes small numbers formidable; procures success to the weak, and esteem to all!" - George Washington. I think that this would give the soldiers hope and to show that this whole thing was worth trouble. This quote showed them that George Washington believed in them and that they were going to win this battle.

Right after George Washington led his Continental army onto the land of Trenton, the Hessians were lined up ready for battle. It broke out into a big blood bath of a match, all you could here was the boom of the canons and guns. The Hessians were fighting with everything they had! Shortly after 8 o'clock the Continental army broke out into the rest of the city, they were working piece by piece to get the whole town down without that big of a fight, even though they had a war going on. The Hessians charging the Continental army like crazy and from every sides, they were forming ranks but the Continental army split into two separate parts and started attaching and killing everything in sight in that town. Eventually after there very long battle George Washington's men overpowered the Hessians and the Battle of Trenton was over. The Continental army had won the whole battle.
