Before the Battle of Long Island Started, and why did it start?
There had been many battles before the Battle of Long Island. The battle before Long Island against the Canadians and the British. It was the Quebec War on December 31, 1775. Then it was the LONG ISLAND BATTLE! The British had to evacuate Boston on March 17,1776. George Washington guessed that the next target would be New York. Let the journey begin!
How did the Battle Of Long Island Start??
The reason how the Battle of Long Island started was because George Washington was hoping to stop the British from seizing New York. They were trying to defend the city. But, the British outnumbered and surrounded George Washington's troops. The British was commanded By William Richard Howe, brother of General Howe.
General Howe's Battle Plan
In June, 32,000 British soldiers headed to Staten Island. They had 400 ships, with 73 war ships. On August 22, 15,000 troops landed to Long Island. 5,000 additional troops served as reinforcements. The British forces total to 20,000.
George Washington's Battle Plan
George Washington started heading towards New York City on April 1776. Washington split his colony into 5 divisions. 3 divisions were deployed to the South end of Manhattan, 1 to Northern Manhattan, and 1 in Long Island. He started to move is troops to Long Island in may. Forts and cannon were installed. Major General Nathanael Greene was supposed to command, but he got ill a few days before. Israel Putnam was then to command. During planning George Washington thought that the Long Island would be a distraction, so he directed the main troops to Manhattan. Washington stayed back in Manhattan with a majority of the troops. The American plan was to direct the defenses and forces under Putnam. Washington's plan was to do heavy damage on the British troops.
The Action of the Battle of Long Island!
The Americans left 4 roads unguarded: Gowanus Road, Flatbush Road, Bedford Road, and Jamaica Pass. British General Clinton found out about this. He made a plan with Howe to march the main army to these areas. 10,000 troops marched their way to the Jamaica Pass on August 26th. On the morning of the 27th Clinton's army fired to begin frontal attack! General William Alexander and General John Sullivan led the American's to Guana Heights. Clinton's army simultaeously flanked the American's. Fierce combat. He took a toll on both British and American's. The British succsesfully took over Sullivan's position and gained central path. Sullivan barely managed to evacuate his troops before the British could get them, and Sullivan was captured. Washington's assumption of the main attack on Manhattan was wrong! He tried to get the troops from Manhattan to Brooklyn, but it was to late! Britain took control of the battle! Stirling, who was defending the western managed to succsesfully thwart attacks. However, the British gained control and attacked Stirling! Britain reinforced to the main pass. Stirling stayed back with 400 troops. He ordered the rest to fight in Brooklyn Heights. In the mission, 256 Maryland soldiers were killed.
Retreat!
Washington and his army prevented to further damage and tried to hold onto Brooklyn Heights. The British were slowed down, and did not do an "all-out" attack. Washington was asked to retreat on August 29th, the Americans staged one of the greatest feats. They evacuated more than 9,000 soldiers. The American army was defeated in Long Island. 300 soldiers were killed, 700 wounded, and nearly 1,000 were captured. Sullivan and Stirling were captured by the British. The British barely lost anyone! 64 were killed, 31 went missing, and 293 were wounded. The British captured New York City. Washington was forced to retreat New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The British ended up conquering the Americans!:( The war ended on August 29, 1776. Many say that the defeat at Long Island was attributed to splitting into two, Manhattan and Long Island.
