Her full name was Elizabeth Griscom, her parents were Rebecca James Griscom, and Samuel Griscom. She was born on January 1st, 1752, Philadelphia, and she died on January 30th, 1836, Philadelphia, and she was widely known for making the first American flag. Born the 8th of 17 children to a Quaker family, she learned to read, write, and sew at an early age. She had six sisters and one brother named George.
She had two husbands. Her first husband's name was John Ross, and when he left for war she took over his shop. After receiving word that her husband died in war she re-married. After she re-married she still ran John's shop. Her second husband died in war to and she re-married again. She had lots of kids in throughout all her marriages.
Betsy Ross was a patriot and helped the patriot cause by risking her life to sew the first American flag. The first American flag was also the symbol of the patriots. George Washington visited the home of Mrs. Ross before he became general. He knew her skill with a needle, she embroidered his shirt ruffles. When George Washington became the General of the Continental Army, he appeared on Mrs. Ross's doorstep around the first of June, 1776, with two representatives of Congress, Colonel Ross and Robert Morris.
They asked her if she could make a flag according to a rough drawing they carried with them. At Mrs. Ross's suggestion, Washington redrew the flag. The flag for the new republic was not used until six years later. This account of the creation of our first flag was brought to light in 1870 by one of her grandsons, William J. Candy, at a meeting. This took place 94 years after the event took place. Mr. Canby was a boy of eleven years when Mrs. Ross died in his home.
A/N:
When I got this topic I didn't think there was much to know about her besides the fact that she sewed the first American flag. But, I found more stuff about her than I thought I would! Even though the information was hard to find I still managed to find out more then I usually could. Another one of my first thoughts about this topic was that this was going to be boring. But, it was actually very interesting. I didn't mind the topic that much, I think it was an ok topic.
