Who was John Hancock?
John Hancock was born January 23, 1737 in braintree Massachusetts. At the age of seven, John Hancock's father died when he was a child, so his mom took him and his sibling to go stay with some relatives in Lexington. Later on, his mother sent him to go live with his aunt, Lydia and his uncle, Thomas Hancock. His aunt and uncle had no kids, so they later adopted him. He did all of his growing up there.
When John was older, he got into Harvard collage. When he graduated in 1759, he started to work for his uncle. He decided that he wanted to go live in London. when he got back in 1764, he was told that his uncle's health was failing. In 1764, his uncle finally died. He received his business and his estate.
In 1760 he won two consecutive political positions. He entered into politicos. He became inextricably involved because he got elected as the Boston selectman. To avoid having to get british taxation to his business he smuggled goods aboard his vessel. In 1768, his ship was taken over by the british. They told him that the good had not been paid for. John was given a huge fine and was taken to court. John told everyone that he wanted all the british forces gone. He started to protest against them.
In 1774, John Hancock was made leader of Massachusetts to the second continental congress. Of Course John Hancock was still being hunted by the british general, Thomas gage. In may of 1775, John Hancock was unanimously elected as president of the second continental congress. On August 28, 1775, he got married to Dorothy Quincy They later had a daughter named Lydia, who died as an infant.
July 4, 1776, John Hancock was the first one to sign the declaration of independence. Its stated that the 13 colonies were free from British rule. This made everyone so happy. Later on in 1778, his wife, Dorothy Quincy gave birth to a boy. They named him John Hancock after his father. From 1785-1787, John Hancock was affected by gout. Its a inflammatory disease that affects the joints. Later in 1787, his son died from a head injury. In 1789, John Hancock ran for president. He only received 4 votes. George Washington won first president.
John Hancock died in 1793. He died at the age of 56 by his wife at his side. His funeral was organized by one of his old friends. Thousands came to his funeral! There were judges and members of the congress. The vice President also came. He was buried Boston's Granary Burying Ground. John Hancock was a very successful man. He did a lot of great things.
