Information
General John Burgoyne
General John Burgoyne was born 1722, Sutton, Bedfordshire. He is best remembered during his surrender to the American forces during the American Revolution. He gained an education from Westminster, and then entered the army at the age of 15 years old. He saw active Foreign Service during the Seven Years' War, and he won a very important British Victory in Portugal during 1762. He was promoted to Major General and was sent to North America as reinforcement for General Gage in 1775 where he learned about the Battle of Lexington and Concord.
He witnessed the Battle of Bunker Hill and in frustration of lack of authority he went back to Britain. A year later he convinced the king and Prime Minister to give him an army to head to Canada. Working their way down to America. They trusted him with the most skillful army in England. This happened in 1776.
Marching down Hudson River he easily won Fort of Ticonderoga. He soon ran into trouble along the way. He was running low on supplies. He sent word to Col. Berry St. Leger to give him support from the West, who was stopped by the American Forces. General William Howe refused to send someone over for support and supplies.
In an attempt to avoid the American forces it led to a battle at the farm of a Loyalist named Freeman. It is called The Battle of Freeman's Farm. Though they won the battle they were exhausted. They were also heavily damaged. This was something they could not afford.
He decided to wait for promised supplies from General Henry Clinton in New York, but the supplies failed to come. Because of this the General was forced to put his army on rations on Oct. 3, 1777. Four days later in desperation he attacks the American Forces and was easily defeated. The British retreated to Saratoga. The Americans soon besieged them. He then did something more disgraceful than retreat; he had to surrender to the Americans.
I really didn't mind this topic although at the beginning I thought it would be rather boring. This Lobster back deemed to be rather interesting in my eyes. Though I really don't understand why people did not make it to his aid. Though John Burgoyne seemed like a rather spoiled kid. He went back to Britain just because he didn't have authority? Seriously? Though I would've thrown a temper tantrum as well if I didn't have that much authority. I didn't hate this topic, nor do I love this topic. All I cam say I was fine with it.
