Patriots, loyalists, and British
John Adams said that one third of Americans favored the British they were called Loyalists. He also said that one third disliked the British they were called Patriots. The other one third had not chose a side they were called fence sitters. The fence sitters were the biggest group. In the following paragraphs I will talk about the Patriots, Loyalists, and British.
The patriots wanted to leave Britain. They were about one third of the colonists. The patriots had been allies with Britain in the French and Indian war. The patriots thought that they could have the reward of the land they had just won from the French. The British thought otherwise, they denied the request to move to the west of the Appalachian Mountains.
Britain started to tax the colonists to get out of debt and become wealthy. Britain wanted to tax the people so the sugar act was made it was the start of the anger toward Britain. This would lead the patriots to rebel. Britain and the patriots refused to compromise. This started to lead to violence.
Loyalists were people who supported Britain. The loyalists were bullied throughout the war. They were tared and feathered. One group of loyalists were African Americans who were slaves, the British promised to free them if they left their patriot owners. This led close to 10% of the slaves in the 1770's to leave their masters. After the war the slaves and loyalists left the colonies.
The British were taxing the colonists to get out of debt. British hired German troops called Hessians. The British also had Native Americans on their side. The British may have had better soldiers and weapons, but it took a very long time to get them to places. The British surrendered on October 19, 1781.
In the war there were British, loyalists, and Patriots. The patriots disagreed with British rule. The loyalists favored the British. The British wanted to tax the colonists, to become wealthy and get out of dept. In the end the patriots won.
My opinion,
I think that the British should have just let America have a say in it. It would have stopped the violence. I think the patriots exaggerated some parts of the war like the Boston Massacre the British were scared for their lives. I think the British should have been more considerate. That is my opinion on the war.
Questions: What fraction of the colonists where Patriots?
What happened to the loyalists after the war?
